Vineyards

Hillside vineyards grace the landscape of Hermann Farm, as they did in the mid -1800s…current grape varieties include: Norton, Chambourcin and Vignoles.

Missouri’s climate, with its long hot summers, good sun exposure and deep clay soil is excellent for growing grapes…while its cool cellar temperatures allow for the natural aging of wine.

The vineyards at Hermann Farm produce grapes of intensity and layered fruit, but also something more.

Hermann Farm will emphasize the experimental and scientific approach to grape growing which was practiced so successfully by George Husmann and others in Hermann over 150 years ago.

Plans call for a pilot or prototype vineyard and winery complex to be used for research and study of grape growing techniques in conjunction with the School of Agriculture at the University of Missouri.

In addition, the original press house / wine cellar will be restored to demonstrate how this simple, yet sturdy structure was used in the conversion of grapes to wine, and then for storage of the wine in the cool cellar of the building’s foundation.
